Tale of Nebula Heights

Welcome to ToNH! We're a timeless, boundless roleplay based on a fictional hovering island named Nebula Heights, and we're always looking for new members to expand on the possibilities. ToNH's main plot is sketchy as best - because you are the explorers that will make the plot what it is. The more you explore and have your character interact with the environment, the more likely you'll set the ball rolling on another subplot...

All characters who are currently on the island will hear this once, at whichever time is most convenient. Those sleeping will hear it in their dreams; anyone in a dangerous situation will hear it when they are safe again. You don't need to copy it out in your post, though you can if you want to.

"Greetings, strangers, and welcome to Nebula Heights. My name is Phasma. Thank you to those who discovered my temple; in locating the Awakening orb, you have taken the first step towards revitalising this world. Your purpose is as yet unknown to you, but you would do well to continue making life force tributes at this altar. It is your choice whether or not to trust me. Until I regain the energy that has faded over the years, and my powers over this world reawaken, I will remain dormant. Good luck to you."

Here is documented a basic outline of all the little magical 'quirks' of Nebula Heights. Read it like you would a mad professor's journal: with a hint of trepidation!

THE MIST

  • If one travels straight out from the island horizontally, one will find oneself emerging from the mist on the opposite side of the map to where one started.
  • If one drops vertically, one will fall through the mist over the top of the island and land exactly in the middle of the Central Lake, no matter which edge of the island one fell from.
  • Flying straight up will bring you up towards the underside of the island.
  • The surrounding mist cannot be dispelled. Ordinary weather-mist, however, can be manipulated if one happens to have the ability to do so ordinarily.
  • The mist drenches you, just like ordinary clouds. Leaping off the edge of the island in cold weather is not recommended.

THE LOCKED DOORS

  • If an area is blocked off (for example, the wooden hatch near the Guardian Tree), you cannot open it yet no matter what your character tries. These are probably either still being planned out, their purpose hasn't been found, or things must be done elsewhere in order to unlock the new area.
  • Hints on a task characters are required to do may occasionally be given via certain characters' actions, or more likely, voices from the Temple (which will take the form of global announcements or news bulletins).

THE WEATHER

  • Weather conditions are entirely up to you. Since a character may be in multiple threads at once but technically 'at different times' during the roleplay, the weather will vary depending on how you want it.
  • If a character normally controls the weather, these powers will be suppressed as soon as a Storm rolls in.
  • Storms can (and probably will) send lighter characters flying. While the mist prevents them from leaving, being thrown about in a particularly violent storm is a highly disorientating experience.
  • Storms are extremely dangerous in Nebula Heights. While they cannot affect the physical properties of the island itself (they will never destroy buildings or cause forest fires), they can certainly affect the characters currently living on the island. If you wish to stay safe, stay indoors! The Mines and the houses on the Main Street are safe... as is the Temple. Despite this not having walls, there is an invisible barrier that prevents wind or rain from passing straight through the Temple. This could be considered a sanctuary of sorts.
  • Sunlight comes from the eastern side of the island. When night-time is due, the light will fade, but will not move. Moonlight comes from the West. The mist has no effect on the sunlight or moonlight. It seems most intangible effects of Nebula Heights will never affect anything except your characters.

THE TEMPLE

  • All characters who are currently on the island will hear whatever is in the "TEMPLE VOICE" side-box once, at the soonest time that is most convenient. Those sleeping will hear it in their dreams and remember it upon waking; anyone in a dangerous situation will hear it when they are safe again. Spells which affect hearing or mind guards will not affect whether or not the Temple Voice is heard; it seems the speaker is omnipotent in this regard.
  • Any object placed on the raised 'sacrificial plinth' in the middle of the temple will vanish. Assume this for everything placed in it, unless an admin or moderator intervenes with black font...
